Beginning as an adult

Your musical tastes, goals and available time all matter when planning lessons. You may want to play a favourite melody, understand notation or create a space for yourself. A small, concrete first goal—such as playing a short melody with a steady pulse—makes the process easier to follow.

Practice during a busy week

Rather than waiting for a long stretch of free time, choose short practice sessions you can sustain. Give each one a single purpose: the rhythm of two bars, a left-hand accompaniment or a comfortable transition. Write down questions to discuss in your next lesson.

Returning after a break

Begin with a slow assessment instead of expecting to play old pieces at their former speed immediately. Your remembered reading skills and current coordination may differ. Choose repertoire that supports both, making the return more enjoyable.
